Confab on Renewal Energy underway in Accra

The Executive Director of the ECOWAS Regional Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE), on Wednesday met with key stakeholders in the renewable energy sector in Accra to plan towards the future.
The meeting focused on the vision, mission and activities of ECREEE’s operation in member states.
ECREEE is a specialised agency established in November, 2008 during the 61st session of ECOWAS Council of Ministers in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
Mr Mahama Kappiah who is on a three-day visit to the country, said the vision of the Centre was to improve energy security and increase access to modern energy service.
This would support the economic and social development of member states in an environmentally benign manner through the promotion and deployment of renewable energy and energy efficient technologies.
He said the institution would also establish contacts and partnerships with relevant national institutions, the private sector and academic establishment among other players.
Mr Kappiah said the meeting was to “establish collaboration with national institutions and other initiatives in the region and obtain updated national data on Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RE&EE) and also engage in the gathering of baseline data in member states”.
“Among the key priority actions for the year is to launch a regional renewable energy resource assessment, which will take into account all sources of renewable energy including solar, small hydropower wind,” he added.
In addition, the centre would establish a regional RE&EE observatory, launch the ECOWAS renewable energy facility, which would provide co-funding for innovative RE&EE projects.
ECREEE is supported by the ECOWAS Commission, Austria, Cape Verde and Spain with technical assistance from the Cape Verde-based United Nations Industrial Development Organisation.
