GACC organises forum to educate youth groups to promote integrity

The Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition (GACC) is implementing a project to safeguard the young and growing democracy of Ghana through educating, directing and reminding the youth on their values and crucial role in national development.
The project on the theme, “Promoting Integrity in Ghana’s 2012 Elections: The Role of the Ghanaian Youth” seeks to promote free, fair and peaceful election in 2012 with the focus on the role of the youth in building a democratic nation through credible elections.
Mr Samuel Akuamoah, Public Education Director of National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) speaking at the opening session of a day’s Youth Dialogue in Accra, advised the youth to demonstrate a high sense of integrity during the elections, since they would be at the centre of activities.
Forty-five participants drawn from youth and students groups including community youth groups, students representative councils, religious youth groups, political parties, youth groups and youth networks attended dialogue.
Mr Akuamoah called on the youth to refrain from electoral malpractices that would affect the electoral processes because Ghana had an enviable record in conducting free and fair elections in West Africa.
“You are the future leaders of this country and the future belongs to you, make sure you uphold it in high esteem,” he added.
He expressed the hope that participants would communicate what had been discussed to their colleagues.
Mr Charles Ayamdoo, Director of Anti-Corruption Department at the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), said as future leaders they should exhibit a sense of responsibility in all their endeavours.
The participants were taken through institutional corruption and accountability, government corruption and accountability, political accountability, role of integrity in promoting good governance, the challenge of the youth in practicing integrity and role of the youth in promoting integrity in Election 2012.
They are expected to be well informed on the effects of lack of free and fair elections on the country’s development.
It is also envisaged that the capacity of the youth would be improved to initiate effective integrity systems to serve their various groups and communities after Election 2012 and understand their role in the promotion of peaceful free and fair elections.
